Laut World Health Organization (WHO) war Krebs im Jahr 2019 die 1. oder 2. Haupttodesursache vor dem 70. Lebensalter in den meisten Ländern 1. In Österreich repräsentierte Krebs im Jahr 2022 mit 23% aller Sterbefälle die zweite Todesursache nach den Herz-Kreislauferkrankungen (34%) 2. Insgesamt litten im Jahr 2020 österreichische Patienten insbesondere unter den sechs häufigsten Krebserkrankungen: Prostatakarzinomen (bei Männern), Brustkrebs (hauptsächlich bei Frauen), Lungenkrebs, Darmkrebs, Bauchspeicheldrüsenkrebs und Hautkrebs 3. Die Frühidentifizierung einer Krebserkrankung ist mit einer besseren Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit assoziiert 3. In den letzten Jahrzehnten zeigte sich glücklicherweise, dank des medizinischen Fortschritts, ein stetiger Anstieg der 5-jährigen Überlebensrate von Krebspatienten 3.
